Pumila Astilbe

9-12” tall x 9-12” wide. If you’re looking for an astilbe that can brighten a dull shady corner without taking up too much room, ‘Pumila’ may be exactly what you’re searching for. In late summer, frothy reddish-pink flowers are held above deep green/burgundy foliage and last for weeks. They’ll eventually dry in place and create fall and winter interest if not deadheaded. ‘Pumila’ spreads via rhizomes – great news for the gardener dividing plants and creating shady beds, but its low growth habit means that it can also create a low-maintenance groundcover for shady areas that might otherwise struggle for color late in the season. Astilbes prefer soil on the moist, acidic side and do well near the banks of streams or ponds or at the edge of a woodland garden. They also make good cut flowers for indoor vases, and pair well with Japanese anemones and variegated hosta.
